It seems that almost everyone now is jumping on the ‘green’ or eco-friendly bandwagon. Not a bad thing for those who want to purchase more responsibly, but it can be if companies are just playing into your emotions and making false claims. The Federal Trade Commission is setting tighter rules for labeling so that now, companies have to provide an explanation about what makes their product green, and if the label is provided by the companies own evaluation or third party. Even better, if by third party, if the company has some special ties to that group, it must be disclosed. At least for food we know if it says USDA Organic certified it’s the truth, but there are other labels on there that we have no clue who provided it.

In one case the commission charged clothing retailers with deceptively labeling products as being made from bamboo when they were made of rayon. Well, technically they were partially correct, because some components of plants can be extracted to make the synthetic fiber. However, when you say something is made from bamboo, every person in their right mind is going to think actual bamboo fibers, not one component that was taken from the plant and mixed with who knows what chemicals to make synthetic fibers like rayon.

Want to hear something funny, I was on an office supply website, and clicked on the option for eco-friendly products, and I came across a cleaner that claimed to be Kosher. Hello, how was the process of making the cleaner and then the actual cleaning product ritually fit? It’s also strange to see non-food items labeled as vegan.

So I don’t know if every state has jumped on this or not, but Texas has and had the nerve to tell people that it will benefit them.

According to Wikipedia, a smart meter, according to regulatory authorities[7], is an advanced meter (usually an electrical meter) that records consumption in intervals of an hour or less and communicates that information at least daily via some communications network back to the utility for monitoring and billing purposes (telemetering). Smart meters enable two-way communication between the meter and the central system. (This is what mine looks like)

On the Smart Meter Texas website, they claim it is a very smart way for Texans to manage electricity because SMT allows you to view daily electricity usage in 15 minute increments. Really!!!!! The smart meter doesn’t allow me to manage my electricity. It can show me how much electricity I am using in 15 minute increments if I walk my ass outside my house and around the corner to look at the meter.

Seriously folks, who is actually going to walk outside just to look at their meter even if it’s once per day. Oh, and the electricity company also added a fee to the bill to pay for the installation of the meters that they have been charging for a number of years. I think I’ve been paying for 2 years before I got my meter. Oh, and I just realized, the electronic display that changes to show different information (3 types of information) needs electricity, so I’m paying a little extra for that too on my bill. Bastards!

If I want to see that data from my smart meter, I have to create an account to view the information online. That seems fine, but pointless. I’m not going to look at it at work, and when I’m at home I don’t have time. I’d rather it be something we can see from inside our house, so we can actually see the differences between leaving lights on or turning them off without having to go outside and look.

After logging out of my Hotmail account, I came across a tagline on MSN that was interesting. US. to apologize for STD experiments. I thought, ‘Again, didn’t they already apologize for Tuskegee?’ Well this incident was in Guatemala in the 1940s.

Proud to have earned a Master of Public Health degree, it greatly upsets me that this study was carried out by the U.S. Public Health Service, an agency I actually considered working for. What happened is so not what I was taught public health is about. Oh yeah, and NIH co-sponsored the study.

I think Tuskegee was horrible for lying to men about being treated, but I have to admit, Guatemala was worse since mentally ill patients were purposely infected and encouraged to engage in activities to spread the disease.

After the subjects were infected with the syphilis bacteria — through visits with prostitutes who had the disease and direct inoculations — it is unclear whether they were later cured or given proper treatment.

Simply ridiculous.

So I thought it was the fact that I bought the Target brand dish washer liquid, then I went back to Cascade and had the same problem. Got some Jet Dry because you know, that’s supposed to make the dishes sparkle and shine…didn’t matter. So, I thought maybe my dish washer is a piece of shit. Turns out it is the dish washing liquid.

I pre-rinse my dishes, although I’m told I don’t really have to because the dish washer takes care of it. But it’s a real pain in the ass when my pots and pans and my daughter’s sippy cups have a weird white residue left behind on them. So not only did I waste water pre-rinsing, running the dish washer, and then electricity for drying, I wasted water again to re-rinse the white crap off of all of the dishes. And it wasn’t something that I can just do quickly like run some water through. I couldn’t get the white stuff off unless I also wiped with the dish cloth. If I wanted to do all of that, I would have hand washed the entire sink load in the first damn place.

I read an article on Reuters.com about a study done by some Harvard School of Public Health researchers that kind of pissed me off. Not because of the growing evidence of adverse health effects from the crap we allowed and still allow to continue when it comes to our food, but because of the closing sentence.

‘”A good washing of fruits and vegetables before one eats them would definitely help a lot,” he said.”

If you all think that washing your produce will rid it of pesticides/insecticides, whatever, you are mistaken. How do you think the chemicals kill insects? Only two things are possible…either the chemical is sprayed on the fruit that the insect eats (which washing won’t help because if it were that simple, orchards would have to apply on a daily basis-watering and rain will wash the pesticides off all the time) or the chemical is sprayed, and whatever poor insects are out in the open will become covered in the chemical.

If the insect is covered in pesticide, how does it eventually die? Insects have hard exoskeletons. Well, the chemical gets absorbed between the joints of the exoskeleton. If the chemical can be absorbed into the insect, it sure as hell can get absorbed into the soft skin of a fruit or vegetable, and then we eat it. Think about that people. DO NOT believe that washing your fruits and vegetables will wash away all the chemicals that have been sprayed on it. Harvard should be ashamed for telling you so.

So, during the senate hearing about the BP/Transocean oil rig disaster, there are a bunch of excuses thrown out and it’s ridiculous. Don’t give the excuse that it’s not your fault the shear rams didn’t work and no other company knows if their shear rams work since collapses never happened. Do you not have emergency drills??

I think what happened is since the regulators were being paid by the industry with drugs and money and things were overlooked, like an emergency plan, no one was prepared. No reason why the largest spills that happened in the gulf spilled seven times less oil than this incident. As we move forward, we are supposed to be smarter, but complacent and dumb assish (new word). Not much I can say that you probably haven’t heard before.

I didn’t support and still don’t support Obama’s plan to expand off shore drilling to decrease our dependence on foreign oil. How about we just decrease our dependence on oil period-foreign and domestic. And for the dumb ass Texans (Perry and Patterson) who think the disaster was an act of God and the environmental concerns from environmental “hippie tree huggers” like me were valid…30 years ago, you make me ashamed to live in Texas….F U

So, I was reading the NY Times about 7New Rules for the Environment and was a little confused.

excerpt from the #3 rule… In “Denialism,” a book about the spread of unscientific beliefs, Michael Specter criticizes the “organic fetish” as a “pernicious kind of denialism” being exported to poor countries.

“Total reliance on organic farming would force African countries to devote twice as much land per crop as we do in the United States,” he writes. “An organic universe sounds delightful, but it could consign millions of people in Africa and throughout much of Asia to malnutrition and death.”

Well, my question is what did African and Asian farmers use before the invention of pesticides and fertilizers? All fruits and veggies were considered ‘organic’ once upon a time.

Perhaps the use of fertilizers and pesticides have ruined chances of societies to go back to the days before their use. Land is over harvested and soil is left raped of all nutrients, and thus, nothing will grow without the help of fertilizers. As for pesticides, I’m sure everyone has heard of drug resistant bacteria..same for insects.

Also, last and most important, ORGANIC FOOD DOES NOT HAVE A HIGHER NUTRITIONAL VALUE. Whoever purchases organic food because they think it is healthier based on nutrition has been lied to. A study from the London School of Hygiene wasted a lot of money to come to that conclusion. ORGANIC FOOD IS HEALTHIER BASED ON THE FACT THAT IT DOES NOT CONTAIN CHEMICAL RESIDUE. The food is free of fertilizers that are absorbed into the plant that you will later eat, and free of pesticide residue that sits on the outside of fruits and vegetables. If you think you can wash off pesticides, YOU’RE WRONG. How do you think pesticides work?

Pesticides absorb through an insects exoskeleton, its not that the insect always eats the poison off the plant. If the pesticide can absorb through a hard exoskeleton, don’t you think it can absorb through the soft skin of a tomato, peach, apple, etc.

It’s true, not everyone can purchase organic, which is why lots turn to gardening at home. It may not completely subsidize your family, but at least your poison intake is a little less. I buy organic when and I also garden in my backyard. Make your own fertilizer or purchase organic fertilizer, but make sure not to overdue it.

There’s a lot of info from the Dallas Morning News and The Fort Worth Star Telegram.

TX voted to strike the word “democratic” from references to the US form of government, replacing it with the term “constitutional republic”

person 1: Are you serious? I demand that you move.

I don’t mind the term democratic republic. just seems unnecessary to make a big fuss just because TX doesn’t like democrat

While calling the US a constitutional republic is also technically accurate, it is a blatent political move on the part of the TX schoolboard. Damnit, you made me go read some aritcles on this and now I’m all angry!

person 4: I would give my political intake on all this, but [person 2] seems to be in his feelings on this and I wouldn’t want to hurt them anymore.
